6 Simple DIY Green Cleaning Tips

  1. Lemons

Every few weeks, you’ll want to give your cutting boards a little extra maintenance. To do this, liberally sprinkle salt on the surface of the board and rub it with a lemon slice. To finish, rinse the cutting board thoroughly with hot water.

  1. Salt

Want to know the best way to clean your cast iron? Scrub it with some salt and a soft sponge. Salt is a natural abrasive, so it absorbs oil and lifts away bits of food, yet preserves the pan’s seasoning. Complete the process by rinsing away the salt and wipe it dry.

  1. Baking Soda

This is an old trick, but if you add 1/2 cup of baking soda to your average amount of liquid detergent, you can get whiter whites and brighter looking colors. The baking soda softens the water, meaning you can use a smaller amount of detergent or bleach.

  1. Hydrogen Peroxide

Your sponges obtain tons of bacteria after so many uses. Using a shallow dish, soak them for about 10 minutes in half hydrogen peroxide and half warm water mixture. Another tip is to pour half a cup of hydrogen peroxide in your toilet, let it sit for 20 minutes, and then scrub it spotless. It’s less harsh and potent than bleach.

  1. Vinegar

When you mix ¼ cup of vinegar with 1 cup of water, you can create a very effective shower cleaner. Combine both ingredients in a microwavable bowl for about 30-60 seconds and then pour it into a spray bottle. Spray the cleaner on your shower surfaces and let it sit for about 5 minutes before you wipe the area down with a microfiber cloth.

  1. Essential Oils

There are many uses for essential oils. One that works great is a homemade carpet deodorizer that only contains two ingredients. Combine two cups of baking soda and 30 drops of your favorite essential oil in a fresh cheese or salt shaker.  Disperse the mixture generously on your carpets, let it sit for a couple hours, and then vacuum it up.
